Boomer is out of surgery after 2.5 hours. The tech called while they were closing and then his vet, Dr. Cowan, called after Boomer was awake in recovery. Boomer is still under the effects of the epidural and isn’t aware his leg is gone yet. He also has a soaker in where the vet is administering a medication to block phantom pains. This can stay in up to 3 weeks. Along with that, Boomer has a pain drip going so he will be totally comfortable through the night. I am so happy Dr. Cowan is so focused on his patients and pain management. It brings a lot of peace of mind to Boomers family.
While Boomer was gone today, we blocked of stairs with easy people access. Also we moved 3 chairs out of the entrance room and moved a queen size mattress down for Boomer and me to sleep on when he gets home. Just as a precautionary, we set up a crate and put some comfy blankets in it in case I have to leave. I don’t want him to start back to his Super Boomer duties to soon.
As hard as it is we are not going to see him tonight. The vet recommended we let him rest because (being the super Boomer he is) he will try to get up and wag his tail if we go to see him. This could cause problems and we don’t want to do that.
This has been a long day for all of us. Thank you all for all of your support and if Boomer is up to it and home tomorrow, I am sure he will update everyone.
Yeah Boomer!! Holding off on the Super Boomer duties is a good idea. We hope you all can get some rest while he has others taking care of him. You’ll want to be rested for his return. Good luck!
Mary
Such a relief when you get that call that he’s OK, isn’t it!
He’s a lucky boy to have such a caring family!
Hooray for being out of surgery. Sounds like you are set for him to be home again. Do you have a sling to use in case he needs help getting in/out of the car or going outside? (Can just be a towel or a reusable grocery bag w/ the sides cut out, lined with a towel.)
All the best for a quick recovery,
Jackie, Angel Abby’s mom
It was a huge relief when the call came saying Boomer is okay. We are lucky to have such a wonderful furry kid/super hero.
WooHoo! We knew ya would be OK Mr. SB. Rest up good and you will be back to “new” normal in no time!
TR and the OP+1
So glad to hear that Boomer made it through the surgery and will be resting comfortably tonite. You might have many questions for us when you bring him home. Most people do. Everyone will be so happy to help you in any way they can. Hope you can get some sleep tonite. Rest up before he comes home. You’ll need it!
Glad to hear surgery went well! Hope he has an uneventful and speedy recovery!
Sleep didn’t happen last night. I called and go an update at 3 this mornig. He still hadn’t eaten and was very groggy. At 5:30 the report was still the same. They took him out and he was trying to use the missing limb and can’t seem to figure out it is gone. He is still very well medicated. I am getting ready to go see him for the first time since the surgery. Maybe Boomer will eat something for me. We do have lots of cottage cheese, chicken broth and hamburger here at home for him.
So glad to hear Boomer had a great surgery and is resting. When you visit him, keep in mind he’ll be on a lot of meds, and may be a bit “loopy.” But he’ll be really happy to see his Mom and Dad! Tell your boy his fellow Tripawds are keeping him in their thoughts!!
Yay Super B! You keep resting so you can return to your Super Boomer duties when you are recuperated. I will be vigilant with Celebrity Tripawd Lab Powers until you’re ready to go.
